The middle finger is a gesture which is used to be rude to people and to say “Fuck you”. Nova uses this a lot, enough so that some messages that he sends on discord are borderline filled with them. It has been an inside joke to use the middle finger emoji (🖕) to the extent that Nova has. Nova is also known to cuss out his trolls to a moderate extent, while using swears in some of his Meltdowns. It is noted that Nova was still swearing even after claiming to convert to Mormonism.
